This was one of several engravings of whales made after Goltzius's designs. A washed up whale was an interesting opportunity to study the creature, but could also be interpreted as an ill omen, as often emphasized in the accompanying text on such illustrated broadsides.

Catalogued an original set of 91 hand-coloured woodcuts from the ‘Schatzbehalter’ by Michel Wolgemut and published by Anton Koberger (Nuremberg, 1491). The prints retain their original color and vibrancy as the set was bound into a volume in the early 18c

All great artists drew a lion or two: Rembrandt's lioness devouring a bird combines careful study with vigorous execution, seen especially in the freely-drawn hindquarters. A nice contrast to Rubens's monumental lions, both studies for paintings (Daniel and Samson)
