This was one of several engravings of whales made after Goltzius's designs. A washed up whale was an interesting opportunity to study the creature, but could also be interpreted as an ill omen, as often emphasized in the accompanying text on such illustrated broadsides.
Early 16c English reception of Lucas van Leyden! This survey of the former Benedictine monastery of Colchester, drawn up by royal commissioners after the confiscation of the Abbey in 1539 (BL, Egerton MS 2164) references Lucas's engraving 'Triumph of Mordecai' (1515)
Catalogued an original set of 91 hand-coloured woodcuts from the ‘Schatzbehalter’ by Michel Wolgemut and published by Anton Koberger (Nuremberg, 1491). The prints retain their original color and vibrancy as the set was bound into a volume in the early 18c @britishmuseum #woodcut
New @playmobil addition to the office: Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom, handicraft and warfare with her owl, snake and Gorgon shield. Note the resemblance to Jacob Matham's engraving of Athena after designs by Hendrick Goltzius (c. 1587) #curatordesktoys https://t.co/THR0VBIdXF
All great artists drew a lion or two: Rembrandt's lioness devouring a bird combines careful study with vigorous execution, seen especially in the freely-drawn hindquarters. A nice contrast to Rubens's monumental lions, both studies for paintings (Daniel and Samson) #WorldLionDay

Majestic beasts c/o @PP_Rubens - Rubens looks to Roman and 16C Italian art yet does something entirely his own https://t.co/OVlaXyUPid
