Dazzling ancient colours of Pompeii's beautiful household shrines (lararia) - by the brilliant Luigi Bazzani who spent 35 years from 1880-1915 documenting the ongoing excavations of Pompeii with masterful watercolor paintings.
The farmer had unearthed the treasures gathered from a Roman sanctuary to the god Mercury dating to the 1st-2nd centuries AD. The temple treasure had been hastily concealed in a vault lined with Roman tiles around the 3rd century but was never recovered.

Just photographed this electric portrait of Augustus, clearly channelling the power of the gods on this small silver denarius. Despite the ageless portrait of Augustus he was in reality over 60 years old when the coin was struck at the turn of the 1st century. #roman #numismatics
