In my opinion, the secret ingredient to Thomas is that at the heart of it all is a genuine love for the age of steam: The beautiful British countryside, the railways crisscrossing it linking the towns together, and the people and engines who live in that world together.
I especially love all the educational diagrams and articles on how engines and railways operate using characters from the books to demonstrate. And of course the map of Thomas' Branchline is wonderful too. It helps the Island of Sodor feel like it could be a real place.
