to just stop using the box would result in dire consequences: they needed resources since (as aldrich says) “invading other worlds is expensive.”

their way of life needed to continue with consistency or else they would not be able to reach that “greater purpose”

examples of greatest feats would be advancing their medical technology with the mossmen and finding the secrets of immortality with the shadowfish, creatures they captured and enslaved from conquered worlds.

and with the box, the leviathans rose to power and created a world and empire that was theirs. the core and aldrich were too stubborn to give everything up because they spent countless generations perfecting their society and monarchy that they built with the box’s power.

also mother olm said that “the olms believe the stones serve a greater purpose and should be left alone while others (i.e. the leviathans) believe their power should be used for conquest”
