if you're using mostly reds,oranges and yellows, then go for warm toned. for blues, purples, pinks and greens go for cool toned.

by using colors which have hints of color tone in them they blend better with more saturated colors and stand out from dark lineart.

...in my simple style, as shown in the example below (sorry i don't have many finished examples)

dang i remember seeing a post a while ago, just after getting comfortable with using way too desaturated colors, which basically said 'don't be a coward to use saturated colors' and i thought PFFT i'm never going to do that. it looks naff.
