There's not much that can match the beauty of a backlit #rose. It's more than that bright rim of light on the edges, but also the intensity of color as the sun shines through the transparent petals.

Here you can see just how thinly the paint has been applied, with only a few slightly juicier dabs of paint on the forehead, shoulder and red ties of the hair braids.
Maria was married to #ThomasWilmerDewing, who went on to overshadow her own career. She collaborated on a number of paintings with him, often painting the floral portions, and rarely signing her name.

This last piece is actually an oil painting. I include it only to show how Whistler employed a similar approach in another medium, including the quick deft strokes of the paint, the notes of intense color, and the striped patterns to grab our attention.
This is a painting of Whistler's mistress #MaudFranklin.

While much more subtle, #Cassatt also employs overlaid strokes, especially in the head of the dog. It's important to note that the values in the dog's face are very close to the values in the background.
