On April 25, 1974 the Portuguese carnation revolution overthrew western Europe’s longest dictatorship. In its aftermath, people experience freedom of press, vote, assembly, the right to demonstrate in the streets, to form unions, + a public education and healthcare system. 1

Mozambique 1974. Photo of the removal of the side panels of Mouzinho de Albuquerque’s statue—key figure of the Portuguese wars against local peoples. Notoriously, he captured the Emperor Nguni Gungunhana in Chaimite (1895) & brought him to PT against his will. Statue fell in 75.
