Before P Jackson there was Ralph Bakshi. His 1978 animated version of Lord of Rings brings back happy memories of early video stores. Just revisited & reminded that landscape frames are gorgeous. Rotoscope technique still gives an other-worldly quality. Shame we never got part 2.
A sword is like a bird, clutch it too tightly and you choke it; too lightly and it flies away. Given social distancing rules and my general dissatisfaction with what passes for sport (and shorter temper these days), can we please bring back duelling?
Virtual battlefield tour is on! Conflict Archaeology & Heritage class voted for Flodden (1513) - our cancelled 'real world' trip. Running these every week & might have spaces on minibus in future. I look forward to more world travel! Watch this space. @UofGWarstudies @DrIainBanks
“Are you France? Stand with me! Don’t you know me? I am Ney, Marshal of France!” Saw this beauty in Manchester last Wkend. Marshal Ney Supporting the Rear Guard (Russia 1812) by Adolph Yvon, 1856. Reminds me of the retreat from Moscow scene in The Duellists (shot near Aviemore).
First meeting of a our Great Game volunteers group tonight. No one seemed to find the idea any more insane than we do, so look forward to working with them to make this thing of ours a huge success in June 2019. @WaterlooReplay @DigWaterloo
OTD 1745 Jacobites routed government forces at Prestonpans, after using a night march to get within striking distance. Same tactic was to fail badly at Culloden. Impressions of the march & battle by the much missed Andrew Hillhouse, one our finest painters of historic battles.
