Of course Earth could be in a galactic backwater where ‘intelligent’ life is actually pretty dumb. A Fire Upon The Deep (1993) by Vernon Vinge describes Earth as being in a galactic ‘Slow Zone’, whilst other areas of the galaxy have different physical laws and more advanced life.

Are these books any good? Well there's plenty of bloody action and Hardin is always getting injured and having to fight against immense pain. Plus he has a moustache (sometimes). And a side parting. So he has lots to deal with.

To mask their lack of authors Badger used a huge range of house aliases: Victor La Salle, John E Muller, Karl Zeigfreid, Chuck Adams, Tex Bradley, Trebor Thorpe, D.K. Jennings and Pel Torro were some of the many disguises that Fanthrope, Glasby and a few other writers hid behind.

Today in pulp I look back at an amazing but slightly forgotten British publisher: a company that made a virtue of necessity and an art form out of amazement...
