By the late 19th century scientific gothic horror was in vogue: mad creations of man, crazed séances and mesmeric powers lurked in forbidding houses. The supernatural gothic turned instead towards vampires and etheric creatures.

Mérou and his family eventually escape back to Earth in a rocket ship, but time-dilation means several centuries have passed there, and now the Earth too is ruled by apes.

The travellers chuckle at this tale: as civilised chimps they know no brute human could become so advanced.

The good news is that giant viruses only attack amoebas. But are they evidence of a lost fourth domain of life? Many are skeptical, but the more examples we find the more we learn about the earliest life on Earth and how it may have developed.

It's based on working backwards from organisms that currently exist. What about the extinct ones? Plus LUCA is still a complicated organism. How did this complexity come about? What was before LUCA?

So that tends to be my personal working definition of pulp: the agressive application of modern marketing techniques to the publication of genre fiction.

And the nice thing about that definition is that it also covers the huge change in pulp publishing after WW2.

That all changed when editor Philip Cody took over in 1924. He deliberately built a strong relationship with his readers, asking them for ideas and feedback to help him shape the magazine to better match their tastes.
