Kôichi Yamano led the charge with a 1969 essay arguing that SF had the capacity to be avant garde, rather than simply copying the themes of Golden Age American stories. He launched his own magazine NW-SF to champion his ideas.

A lot of Northumbrian terms are no longer used, which is a shame. Phrases such as "lowpy-dyke" (without self restraint - literally 'a lamb that jumps fences') or "weather-gaw" (the stump of a rainbow) are wonderful words that still serve a purpose.
