Today 13 July 1607: Birth of Václav (Wenceslaus) Hollar in Prague… exquisite & prodigious bohemian C17th etcher.
His very first commission in England was executed on site at Greenwich & magnificently captured the architectural wind of change.

Today 25 March 1677: Death of maybe THE greatest etcher/draughtsman Václav Hollar at Gardener’s Lane, Westminster.
It was Hollar who left us a glorious record of the Greenwich vista and Queen’s House c.1637... being paid the princely sum of 150p !
This day 4 October 1646 death of Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel, a prominent English courtier AND patron of Inigo Jones. Howard made his name as a Grand Tourist & art collector rather than politician, during the reigns of James I & Charles I and once resided in Greenwich.
1st, 2nd OR 3rd June 1653: Richard Deane army & naval officer died at the Battle of the Gabbard.
Later, his body lay in state, in the Great Hall at The Queen’s House, Greenwich.
Today 13 December 2007 this painting worth £200K was returned to the National #Maritime Museum...
The Flemish Baroque artwork c1649, entitled ‘Sunlight on a Stormy Sea’ by Bonaventura Peeters the Elder had been stolen from The Queen’s House 5 months earlier.
This day 28 July 1662: John Evelyn’s diary reveals a meeting at The Queen’s House with the dowager Queen Henrietta Maria, formerly the QH landlady.

This day 3 July 2007: A C17th painting ‘Sunlight on a Stormy Sea’ by Bonaventura Peeters the Elder was stolen in broad daylight, from the first floor west side of The Queen’s House. The painting was said to be worth £200K.

This day 5 June 1660… birth of Sarah Jennings, later Churchill Duchess of Marlborough and very close friend of Princess/Queen Anne. Sarah is the reason we have a #TurnerPrize artist’s pattern on the QH great hall ceiling, instead of the wonderful Gentileschi panels.
