Notiolofos was a sheep-sized ungulate from the Eocene (53 MYA) and are know from a few fossil teeth. They lived in Antarctica which was connected to S. America by a land bridge. Even though the climate was much warmer than today, they would have had to endure long dark winters.
@Planthropology_ I did this piece awhile back to demonstrate the influence of extinct megafauna on plants, this one is eating a melon so bitter It could only be tolerated by mastodons. The domestication of cucubits in North America is really fascinating. Looking forward to next week's podcast!
Had a dream the other night, that we had pet Velociraptors, but we had bred them to have pug-like faces, because of course we would.
After an Early Permian down pour washed nutrients from the surrounding forests into a shallow lagoon, a following heat spell caused an algal bloom of cyanobacteria. This can become toxic and reduce oxygen in the water. This poor Prionosuchus, a large temnospondyl, succumbed to it
The smell of carrion travels far over the white sands of the Mid-Permian, 260 MYA. A Jonkeria, a 12 ft Dinocephalia, scavenges from the carcass of an unfortunate Styracocephalus which died in a flash flood. An impenetrable rock layer causes the rain to collect between the dunes.
Borealopelta (Northern Shield) from the Lower Cretaceous of what is now Alberta was so well preserved it still had the stomach contents of its last meal. They seemed to have a preference for ferns, but charcoal was also found suggesting it had fed at a recently burned forest.
The Gargano Penninsula of Italy was once an island during the Miocene and like many islands the animals evolved into many unusual endemic species. Like this Hoplitomeryx, a small deer-like animal with 5 horns and large canine teeth.
