was fragrant like the
flowers on the slim branches

where is our love gone now?
how did it become
colourless
and without scent
as the withered flowers
on the ground?

how came it that
our love was as transient as
the flowers on the cherry blossom?

Papa went over the seas
and he’ll come back, Emily,
with treasures for his love
 
He’ll bring you pearls
and gorgeous new clothes
and toys from far-off green isles
 
We’ll have better food,
easier times, all sorts of fruit -
and we’ll sleep safe in a home of our own

not here now
The village men
beat him the other day
so that’ll keep him away
otherwise the scum’ll be here
sure as the sun…
Ogles at women’s legs,
girls washing their hair
- think about it - he’s married!
She doesn’t keep him satisfied -
that’s what it is!

makes the young wiser than one’s elders
and so trust in what I say:
it’s painful but there are moments
of clarity and calm -
in spite of the dark curtains…
there’s certainty in the
life-force,
the spirit that abides…
let that console, hold us

we destroy each other
like deviant-vampires
that drain each other;
disconnected, estranged
isolated from the world
we turn on each other
and drink the lifeblood -
taking turns, nurturing the other
for the inevitable violence
and inescapable love-dependency
