As we’ve been seeing the ignorance of political art in the Irish media, I think I’ll share an account of Francisco Goya (1746-1828) - one of the greatest artists in history, a Romantic & a master of the portrait. He also created some of the most powerful political artworks
Given the ignorance of Irish journos re political art I’d like to share one of its greatest exponents & a favourite artist of mine - Honoré-Victorin Daumier (1808-79) is considered the greatest caricaturist in history (by me) & he even went to gaol for mocking his king.
To celebrate my birthday this week I decided to create a series of ink on paper drawings of birds. Birds are my own symbol for creative freedom.
He died in 1864, in Surrey, aged 57. Dyce (1860-4), Praying Hands (1864), Dante & Beatrice (nd) & The Woman of Samaria (nd). For such a profoundly spiritual painter it’s deeply moving that one of his last works was of hands praying.
Dyce was born in Aberdeen into a well-off family & studied first at the RSA. He then trained in London at the RA Schools. He travelled to Rome in 1825. There he studied the works of the masters. Infant Hercules (1824) has quite opaque varnish unfortunately
In the first drawing he seeks to capture animal movement, in the 2nd beauty, the 3rd frivolity & finally in the 4th an idea of form as visual mapping. Woman Washing her Feet (1944), Portrait of François (1946), Faun (1947) & Composition (1948)
Picasso chose to depict Olga in a neoclassical manner (1920). She disliked his friends & avant-garde works, so the style fitted. He would bring a monumentality to the classical style as shown in his Head of a Woman (1921) as well as his Mother & Child (1922)
To understand Picasso you have to realise that every character he creates is a self-portrait. In this period we see him exploring his sexuality & experience through both male & female eyes. Mother & Child (1904), Horse with a Youth in Blue (1905) & Two Nudes (1906) & Nude (1907)
