While on this inked version, it sure does look like the virus head of Sigma (Sigma-0, in-comic) is popping in to surprise Wily, Robotnik and Xander, it’s actually a portal into the past in which the soon to be Mr. X fires & takes out Sigma to stop this whole crossover:
