He was an Italian painter, draughtsman, and sculptor, known for portraits and nudes of him in a style that was characterized by elongation of faces and figures, which was not well received during his lifetime.

Nineteenth-century German Realism, Adolph Friedrich Erdmann, later Adolph von Menzel, was born in Breslau, Germany, on December 8, 1815. He died in Berlin on February 9, 1905.
