Newly on display and exclusive to our followers is this Kashmiri copper samovar. Dating from the early 20th century, it was used for making and serving tea or hot drinks and forms part of our ongoing virtual exhibition tours whilst we are closed to the public.

This week will illuminate the city centre...much like this 20th century oil lamp. It’s decorative back and crescent moon holes would have looked splendid once lit.

Tomorrow marks Guru Nanak Gurpurab, a celebration of the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak. One of the most sacred dates in Sikhism, it is celebrated with hymns and early morning processions called Prabhat Pheris.

This weekend’s celebrations in India would have made use of oil lamps like this one. This bronze oil lamp, or diya, is in the form of a bird and would have hung in a temple.

This weekend sees the Hindu festival of Krishna Janmashtami, the annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Krishna. This metalwork figure from the collection depicts baby Krishna stealing butter.
