Its stories belong to the venerable tradition of moralising animal fables.
They originated in India with the Sanskrit पञ्चतन्त्र Pañcatantra (Five Treatises) but it was their 8th century translation in Arabic كليلة ودمنة Kalīlah wa-Dimnah by Ibn al-Muqaffa that popularised them.
