The term "jack-o'-lantern" may be derived from the Irish legends of Stingy Jack, a conniving drunk who cheats death time & again. When he eventually dies, neither Heaven nor Hell can take him, so he wanders between worlds, using a hollow turnip as a lantern. #FairyTaleTuesday

This is a violent, gory, yet beautiful and moving series (though it should NOT be categorized as YA). It's set in a brutal world based on the Roman Empire and has themes of strength, resilience, faith, forgiveness, & hope.
These books are adorable and important for little brown girls seeking heroines who look like them. I read a few of these when I bought them for my younger cousin. Yasmin is a bright, curious Pakistani-American girl who has fun everyday adventures.
This is an excellent series, though be warned it contains Game of Thrones-level violence. The heroine is Laia of Serra, who I picture as Indian, based on her description. A tale of brutality & suffering but also strength, resilience, faith, forgiveness, & hope.
