Wanted to try and make a more pencil-ish sketching brush.

I'll merge all this to a new layer AGAIN, and start detailing. This step can easily become the longest step. Adding more wrinkles, adding tints, splashes of color, particles, and glow. Here is where you'll want to use the magic COLOR DODGE layer to make things really shine.

At this point I'm basically done with the coloring and now it's time for rendering. I merge all my layers together (without the background) and make some fixes (moved the ear), add some atmospheric perspective (fading further back objects) for depth, and add a drop shadow.

Here I'll do the eyes. I think there's a bit more I want to say in a separate post about eyes, so for now here's how I have my layers setup.

The third light source relies heavily on the environment, which there really isn't one here, but it's the bounce light. I did this during my rendering step, but you can do it here on a layer if you prefer. Light that bounces off a surface will cast that color up from underneath.

Now for the hard/fun part. Lighting!

There's going to be two to three lighting layers, all are set to "Overlay" mode. The first layer will be for the Skylight. This represents the color of the sky, if there is one. Paint it lightly on the upper edges of your character.

I also take this moment to create a layer for accents. Here you can color in smaller details like freckles, noses, patterns, pretty much anything that didn't earn a whole section of color on the flats layer. This is where I like to make the metal look more like metal.

I typically keep the eyes on a separate layer just below lines and above everything else cause they're their own beast. I'll come back to those (maybe). Also, use the darkest color when you flat metals, you'll make them shiny later. Use dark orange/brown for gold for example.

I duplicate the gray layer and this new layer becomes the flats layer. Lock the transparencies on this layer (that little checker board icon next to "lock:" up top). Start coloring in all your flats on this one layer. Ignore small details for now, focus on coloring "materials".

I'm worried about how I'm going to color this since I haven't started in grayscale in a hot minute, but boy it sure do be lookin.
