I actually love Bravely Defaults art style so goddamn much, the pencil in aesthetic, the colours, the texture.
But I honestly don't get the need to translate these into these super crisp 3D renders, it removes all of the life from the originals and feels super sterile.
@ColmDanger Hey Colm,
I'm a concept artist & owner of an art outsourcing studio for games (@SonghornStudios). We're heavily fantasy focused, and primarily work on creatures, but also love working on characters and figuring out their costumes and stories.
Feel free to DM me if you'd like :)
I was recently asked to contribute to ImagineFX, and got a double page spread. I certainly wasn't expecting that!
I talked a bit about dealing with rejection, how it's not something you should take personally, and how it can sometimes have a silver lining if you're optimistic :)
I'm a creature concept artist and illustrator who's worked on things like Avatar, Everwild and Dragon Prince. And I'm currently writing a book on creature design principles.
Did I miss the #AnimalArtistsUnite train?
Now I don't have to avoid long character illustrations anymore :D

Mermaid design focusing more on creature aspects, trying to imagine them as vaguely human. At least human enough for sailors to be confused by

This was the first really successful 'stylized' design I made. This is for a personal project I've been meaning to make, but I feel like my tastes in stylized work have adjusted a lot since, it'd be interesting to see how I'd tackle it nowadays.
Here's a couple more refs I've used, some for angles, posture or trying to understand lighting a bit more
Remember, it's okay to use 3D programs and whatever other method you can to help you with your artwork
Sometimes I have really complicated shapes or angles that I just won't replicate well without some kind of maquette. It's not cheating, it's thinking smarter 👍
