what looks like fanservice with no relevance for Asuka's design in the first half of 3.0 + 1.0 (when she's seemingly around) had significance to it as to give us hints to her character arc (why she wore revealing clothing, her scarf, and her eyepatch for example).

@iQb0p I personally find her arc in 4.0 more meaningful tbh.
People move forward and grow. She found someone good for her to encourage her to move forward.
Her old feelings, but also her new ones.
They didn't hold each other back anymore, but still cared for each other immensely.
Anno's voice recording of Asuka's final scenes made him cry. He loved it. It's the happiness he always wanted from her. You could see his gratitude to the VA for how it was expressed.
2021 is my favorite year for movie releases ever, probably
