Sharad Navaratri (नवरात्रि) begins today, 9 days festival to worship Maa Durga and her forms. The festival is celebrated all across India, and even outside India, with different names and ways.

सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके ।
शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरी नारायणी नमोऽस्तुते ॥

Today, Bhagavaan Vishnu appeared in the form of Hayagriva and restored the Vedas stolen by Madhu and Kaitabha. As the Vedas were restored on this day, Upakarma is performed on this day to mark a new beginning. Hence the day of Upakarma is also celebrated as Hayagriva Jayanti.

Today is Ganga Saptami, when Rishi Jahnu (जह्नु) controlled the turbulence of river Ganga, and Ganga got the name "Jahnavi", the daughter of Jahnu.
