I did this several years ago for a show with the theme "Vesuvius" that never came to fruition. I love the melancholy figures of ash looming over the city ruins.

I use acryla gouache primarily to clean up those pesky edges you see forming in the first pic. It's also useful for picking out tiny white highlights, such as in the dragon's teeth.
