Nomura says that when he drew the characters for Before Crisis, he chose to do so without referring to previous material, hoping it would give their past versions a different feel from those in FFVII. However, he later realized he forgot to give Aerith her sidelocks. (BCCB, 2006)

When designing Tifa from FFVII, Nomura says he had two possible versions: one with a miniskirt, and one with leggings. He wasn't sure which to go with, but when he asked the other staff, they resoundingly preferred the miniskirt, so that's the one he settled on (Dismantled, 1997)

Implementing Red XIII's event scenes was torture for FFVII's planners due to the "tail problem." They had to restrict his movement so his tail wouldn't clip into walls and objects. Eventually they got it all sorted out—only to encounter Vincent's "cape problem." (Famitsu #1224)

Nomura says there was a version of Yuffie that made it all the way to the modeling stage before being scrapped. She had simple clothing with a red and white color scheme and no accessories on her legs. But he decided it wasn't cute enough, so he redrew her from scratch (UO, 2005)

In an early draft of FFVII, Tifa bore a large scar on her back inflicted by Cloud. She also wore a locket containing the photo with Zack and Sephiroth taken in Nibelheim five years ago. Thus, not only was her heart locked away, but she wore a locket over her heart. (UO, 2005)
