6/6 With the demise of the Soviet Union in 1990/91, the Buran program was simply shutdown due to a lack of funds. The 'Challenger' of the program was OK-1.02 Only 95% complete the vehicle made it to the launch pad for fit checks in 1992. It never returned. Resides next to OK-ML2.
1/6 - Buran programs 'Captive Carry' test vehicle that did early test flights on the programs converted former bomber VM-T Atlant. OK-KS would spend the rest of its career on engineering and electrical testing. Recently, repainted to look like the flight Buran. Now in Sochi.
To prep for the first launch of Buran the Soviets threw a lot of money at test vehicles. NASA concentrated on Shuttle Enterprise for early tests such as landings, pad fit checks & more. The Soviets had 4 vehicles to do the same work. Here is their Shuttle family. Part 1 of 2.
