It’s not by mistake that her portrait, Cutting Swash (Leah Chase), painted by Gustave Blanche III, now sits among presidents and revolutionaries in the National Portrait Gallery. A nation valued her work.
Leah Chase, the famed chef and art collector, just died. She was 96. In December, I went to New Orleans and profiled her. We talked in her resturant Dooky Chase about life, art and cooking. She was in the kitchen everyday, using it to give back to her people. RIP Mrs. Chase.
