Unfortunately for Soane, his additions to the existing House of Lords were the only part of this extraordinary scheme to be realised. Soane’s Royal Gallery was built at great speed to be ready for the state opening of Parliament in 1824 – isn’t it beautiful? 😍 (3/4)

Sir John spent £1,732 on these prized works. By comparison, his purchase of 14 Lincoln’s Inn Fields the same year cost £1,480! 🤯

199 years ago today at , Sir John Soane purchased Hogarth’s four-part series ‘The Humours of an Election’, a satirical send-up of eighteenth century politics. 🗳️🎨

No word on whether such raucous scenes can be spotted today in Wakefield or Tiverton and Honiton… 😉

Our word of the day is ‘capriccio’ – an architectural fantasy composed of both real and fictional components. This drawing by 18th c. architect and antiquarian Giovanni Battista Piranesi is a great example and can be enjoyed in our exhibition, open today! 🎉
