Sonic, Shadow, and Silver are similar to Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks. Sonic and Goku are the main characters, Shadow and Vegeta are the rivals of said main characters, and Silver and Trunks are both from the future they want to save. And both trios can transform.

Silver was inspired by Trunks from Dragon Ball Z. Both characters travel to the past in order to prevent an apocalyptic future. In Sonic 06's script at the end of Silver's description, it even says "Think Trunks from DBZ". Both characters can also transform.

On a side note, I'd love for these two to come back.

There are three pieces of Japanese-animated Sonic media. The Sonic OVA by Pierrot (1996), Sonic X by TMS Entertainment (2003), and the animated intro from Sonic Riders by Production I.G, the ones responsible for animating Attack On Titan!

Here's a closer look at one of the humans from the Sonic manga. She's one of the ladies in Sonic's "body guard platoon". I assume it's for Sonic's band that appears briefly. Can't fully confirm it.

Yuji Naka, the former head of Sonic Team, wanted Sonic to be a "impertinent, cheeky character". As the character grew more popular, his image was starting to evolve into something more cute. With the release of Sonic Adventure, Sonic Team tried to retain his "bad boy" persona.
