Imo Sonic doesn't really need a redesign, he just needs a new artistic direction and more in game stylization.

However, I wouldn't be opposed to a redesign at all. It would have to be as inspired as something like the pics below though (they are from fan project "Sonic Skyline")

Also note for Sonic Unleashed, I'm talking about the Wii version and now that I'm a bit older the game is a bit too flawed to still be considered a "masterpiece" by me. But when I first beat it at around 7, I was obsessed. https://t.co/YzlpYWfMFA

I finally got here and uh... it's not NEARLY as bad as Forces but I still kinda don't like it.

In SA2 Sonic was literally "dead" yet Tails didn't back down for a minute. In fact, he used that as motivation to step up and be the big brave hero instead.
