Another #JuliaDonaldson read, 'The Cook and the King' went down splendidly ("But he didn't cook anything!"), as did another #LaurenChild book about accepting new siblings, 'The New Small Person'.
We also read 'Greta and the Giants' by @ZoeTuckerDesign and @zoepersicoart, a fictionalisation of @GretaThunberg's fight against adults /massive corporations, to make these 'giants' realise that they are destroying the world for everyone & suggest another way. Highly recommended
'The Only Way is Badger' by #StellaJJones & @CarmenSaldana is a book about prejudice, racism & building walls to keep out those that sound/look different. 'The Giant Jumperee' is one of my favourites by #JuliaDonaldson (& @HelenOxenbury); builds tension & a good laugh at the end!
The slightly older kids got 'The Proudest Blue' by @IbtihajMuhammad, @metahatem & @SajidahWrites, about a girl choosing her first hijab (& bullying), & 'Oliver's Milkshake' by @fivekingdoms & @alibarts about where milk comes from, because they were learning about farms.
Going back to August 2020, we started off with some strong choices. #LaurenChild's 'Slightly Invisible' with Charlie & Lola, where we're introduced to Soren Laurensen! 'The Koala Who Could' by @RBrightBooks & @_JimField, a great 'new school anxiety' book.
Another class read the start of 'Spellchasers: The Beginner's Guide to Curses', another book by @LariDonWriter, about Molly discovering the magic world. We had a lot of discussions about kelpies and potato farming, & Beth's little sister (who I inexplicably gave a cockney accent)
I should add here that they greatly enjoyed the illustrations by @bagleybooks - the artwork covered every page, and the limited palette worked very well indeed. I've stocked up on the rest of the series!
