an olde page from an olde notebook… on which I created a quick sketch of the castle at Fethard-on-Sea; I decided to use a subtle colour wash to give a feeling of lightness not normally used when describing medieval, but which I feel works well in relation to the place and time

this is my favourite of the two ‘you can’t patent the sun’ paintings, it’s freer approach feels more natural that the hard edges of the 001a painting (a little bit of Max Ernst crossed with Barrie Cooke)

In my paintings I examine the landscape for evidence of man’s hand with the aim of better understanding something of the culture and history that went into creating the space… it's this interest in the physical world that drives me to paint

what’s the best way of sealing/varnishing/waxing watercolour? I don’t use it that often (I find it requires a lot of patience, which as a younger man I found to be in short supply) but I am enjoying it today
