I've enhanced this remarkable portrait of Sir John Herschel (1792–1871) English astronomer who named 7 moons of Saturn & 4 moons of Uranus (a planet his father discovered). An amazing, characterful face, gazing back from 155 years ago. It was taken in April 1867 by Julia Cameron.
My digital enhancements of Frank Hurley's paget plates, taken in 1915 during Ernest Shackleton's trans-antarctic expedition, have proven to be most popular this week! I've pulled four more together for you to enjoy. They are original colour (not colourised).
Re-reading my great-grandfather's autobiography this evening, I was surprised to come across a passage where he mentions meeting Sir Ernest Shackleton. I've tweeted my enhancements of his expedition several times this year without ever appreciating any connection. I love history!
Three Biblical enhancements for you tonight. Dated 1909. But there's a twist! You may be unexpectedly familiar with the sitter for, believe it or not, these are actually Dracula himself, the great horror movie star Bela Lugosi 🤯
Sir Ernest Shackleton's Trans-Antarctic expedition of 1914–1917. The ship is named 'Endurance'. My previous set of Babelised images from their voyage proved popular, so I offer you 4 more, taken on that expedition by Frank Hurley 106 years ago. They are not colourised.
Not all Victorian photos are sombre and straight-laced - take these wonderful shots from 1872. They are tintypes of Walter Fawdon goofing around in various guises for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin. They somehow bridge that 149-year chasm and make him very immediate 🤩
I think his water shots of '50s Hong Kong are particularly gorgeous.
These are some of the remarkable colour images of Hong Kong in the 1950s by the late photographic genius Fan Ho (1931- 2016). He was mostly known for his black & white photography, but his eye for colour was no less stunning.
