dutiful character in marvel history would feel good about himself, by abandoning a world that needs rebuilding and his family, all to selfishly sit on his ass during the segregation era while people he loves suffer over the next 80 years.

He had the 21st century to compare to the past which really shined a light on how bad things were back in the day.
He couldn't sit back and live a relaxed life of privilege knowing innocent people were suffering.
So he comes back.

He witnesses all the time period based injustices and realizes it's not fair for him to just run away and bury his head in the sand like a coward. So he comes back to the 21st century and vows to keep fighting for a better world.
Why? because that's his character.

Peggy is a certified badass and EG treats her like a trophy.
