The use of bright red this episode is staggering, given that Dio means God in Spanish, Akio is lucifer. A fallen angel (prince), left to be obsessed with stars where he once was. Anthy plays the role eve, keeping the prince for herself and taking the “light” away from the world
Utena Ep 34
Storyboards: Junichi Sato
Director: Katsushi Sakurabi
We learn how Utena’s princehood isnt steeped in a heteronormative ideal of patriarchy, but an appropriation and a reclaiming of that power. Birthed from a promise to save another girl, not of one to a man
Utena Ep 29
Director: Yoshiaki Iwasaki
Storyboards: Mamoru Hosoda
Juri doesnt seek power for herself but is ultimately undone by the one she wants power for. The car is not driven in her duel and her defeat is self inflicted. Masterpiece of an episode by Hosoda
Continuing my Utena rewatch today, buy missed some tweets because of the time I left Twitter.
I started the Black Rose arc, the tone and storyboards reflect the shift in the narrative. We are diving deep into people’s, fears, hopes and selfish desires
Despite the coffin imagery in Kazeyama’s ep, there is a hopefulness in it. That we can make through this together. For as Utena was helped out of her coffin, so does Anthy. The white roses are symbolic for devotion, as Utena’s responsibly to the Rose bride lies deeper than duels
Utena Episode 8
Storyboards/Director: Jugo Kazeyama
My favorite directed ep of Utena so far, striking and eloquent with its visual vocabulary does it articulate the death of eternity, the fallacy of Saionji toxic dreams, Anty’s will and Utena’s idea of princehood. Masterpiece
Made something for Kumiko since she is an angel and deserves the world 💙🎺
