The first two people to live in the two houses when the building was divided in 1752 were George Garrett and Timothy Ravenhill. They can sometimes be heard arguing in the Chapel, as well as the sound of a crowd cheering them on.

Perhaps our meanest ghost is Charles Pulley, a Victorian Vestry Clerk with a reputation for horsewhipping people. He lived in the East side of the house when the West side was a girls' school. The ghost of a young girl has been seen hiding from him behind a piano.

In 1994 the house steward who lived on site was woken one night to find Mary Tooke, a wealthy Huguenot from the Georgian times, shaking his bed violently. Maybe since she had such elegant taste she disapproved of the house
steward’s furniture choices.

On a sadder note, Frances Cotton was the first wife of John Machell’s son. She tragically died while giving birth to twin sons John and Francis, who both survived. Some have seen the ghost of Frances sobbing and searching for her children who she never got to meet.
