OTD (3 June 69) destroyer USS Frank E Evans was cut in two while passing under the bows of carrier HMAS Melbourne in the South China Seas during night operations, with the loss of 74 lives. An investigation found the accident to be due to errors on the Evans bridge crew's part.

OTD (11 Oct 51) the light carrier HMAS Sydney (III) created a record for a light fleet carrier by flying 89 sorties in one day. Sydney was operating against Communist store dumps at Kojo, Korea. Though her sisters operated with 8 different navy's, her record was never beaten.
