Read up Tomie by Junji Ito. It's got a bit of ick to it but overall I loved how it played out and how Junji kept the premise interesting for so long while basically repeating it with iteration on iteration per chapter.
Basically my favorite Junji story now. Love that guy.

But I will say it is wild there was ever any debate or censorship at all about Shinji/Kaworu being gay. It SLAPS YOU IN THE FACE with gay shit the moment they meet each other.
