When you are done doing mutations, you settle with one of the variations and then move on to produce a highly detailed version for future reference and to figure out everything about the character before moving to pixel-art.
One of the images we added to our mood board, was the before-mentioned piece by Juha. It was so powerful, that it somehow created a lasting image on the back of our art team's minds. Then, we moved on to the next phase: sketching different mutations trying to find the right one.
