THREAD: Birds of a feather – The many names of the Great Auk

(1/9) The great auk was a bird species once found across much of the North Atlantic, and throughout history, it has received various names in both English and other languages.

1/7: The great auk is the only flightless bird in the North Atlantic, and its Latin name, Pinguinus, alludes to their iconic ecology. However, unbeknownst to most, there is a second line of extinct grounded auks called Mancallinae.

(9/12) The role of the giant adjutants in their ecosystems are likely as megafauna scavengers, much like the extant Marabou Stork. The extent to which they actively foraged on smaller animals is an open question, as is the size of their potential quarry.

(9) What does this tell us about conservation and our view of ecosystems? Many things, potentially, of which most are ultimately subjective conclusions. Yet one thing is clear - in ecosystems, if nowhere else, function trumps form.

(3) From Miocene Iberia to Pliocene India, almost-if-not-every species of animal that inhabited those ecosystems then are now vanished. And yet, comparing the ecological *communities* as a whole, a remarkable continuity is observed.
