When light hits something at a perpendicular angle try to paint it with strokes that follow its path. When light hits something head on, it just goes splat and scatters. The surface then becomes a radiator of light, so anything near it takes the color of its highlight.
Light also works best when you don't overdo it. think what way the light is moving and use a single or as few as possible brush strokes to create the light. Use an eraser or mask to define it more. Light is also a gradient more often than not.
Before applying the gradient, you should also consider whether light or dark will be the focal point. In many cases, if you want something bright to the the focal point, give the background a dark gradient, if the focal point is something dark, make it light.
