Light also works best when you don't overdo it. think what way the light is moving and use a single or as few as possible brush strokes to create the light. Use an eraser or mask to define it more. Light is also a gradient more often than not.
Before applying the gradient, you should also consider whether light or dark will be the focal point. In many cases, if you want something bright to the the focal point, give the background a dark gradient, if the focal point is something dark, make it light.

Wail of despair - commission for @Magarnon, depicting the origin story of a villain in their universe. It was a pleasure to draw this as I enjoy making the villains look more sympathetic, I feel they are the people in from who we can learn the most on how to better ourselves :)
