9 May 1671: Having incapacitated the guard at the Tower of London, Colonel Thomas Blood and his associates make off with the Crown Jewels including crown, orb & sceptre. When caught he declares, “It was a gallant attempt, however unsuccessful! It was for a crown!”

9 Jan 1806: Admiral Lord Nelson's funeral at St Paul's, attended by thousands including the Prince of Wales. The funeral procession includes 32 admirals, over 100 captains, and 10,000 soldiers. The sailors carrying his coffin tear the flag to shreds as mememtos.

5 August 1100: Three days after the death of his brother, King William Rufus, Henry I is crowned King of England in Westminster Abbey, promising a return to the laws of Edward the Confessor.
Henry’s older brother Robert ‘Curthose’ remains Duke of Normandy.

27 May 1199: John ‘Lackland’, sole surviving son of King Henry II and brother of Richard Cœur de Lion, is crowned King of England. Much of his reign will be taken up with unsuccessful attempts to assert his hoped-for dominance in Europe over France and the Pope.
