The final version had 20 extra layers on top that were all either Overlay or Normal mode layers to tightly control the color and get it where I needed to be. I also used Pin Light to add a slight green light to highlight Kyu-hwan with more interesting colors. Before/After:
The ONE smart thing past me did was separate the special effects into a layer group, which allowed me to go back and repaint/rearrange the painting. Here's all the effects layers by themselves. The flames are fractal 'stamp' brushes. The rest is overlay layers + smoke brushes.
It never felt better, but at this point I had sunk so much polish and effort in it that I WANTED to fix it, so I turned to a Discord I'm in full of super talented artists and asked for redline help. One of them did just that and also suggested DOUBLE DOGGO PETTING.
Winging it wasn't super great. The pose didn't feel good to me at all. What I should have done at this point was scrap it and restart with a stronger pose. Instead I kept polishing it + adding effects hoping that at some point it would just come together and feel better.
Kyu-hwan - Step by Step Process! I nearly didn't finish this painting because of several mistakes. I started with a very rough B/W top-down pose angle that I really wanted. I couldn't find any solid reference for what I was trying to go and tried to wing it.
After that I flattened everything and painted on top using Overlay to make small color adjustments.
Step by Step Process! After painting in greys, I punched up contrast and darkened the skin with Multiply + Levels. Then I added color with a mix of Overlay and Color blending modes.
Some close-ups! I like how Tiergan's face turned out.
I accidentally made him look like Runar, but that is okay because Runar is best boy and equally wholesome.
