On this day (27 Feb, 1712), at the age of 68, Emperor Bahadur Shah died at Lahore.
In my opinion, he was the last great Mughal, who like his ancestors, spent majority of his reign accustomed to a mobile tent life, gaining victory after victory in the military & political field.
On this day (15 Feb 1869) Ghalib, the great poet, passed away.
"kaav kāv-e-saḳht-jānī hāe-tanhāī na pūchh. Subh karnā shaam kā laanā hai jū-e-shīr kā".
"What constant pain this loneliness you may not believe. Like from mountains drawing milk, is passing morning to evening".
On this day (10 Jan, 1760) the battle of Barari Ghat was fought in which Dattaji Scindia was defeated & killed trying to protect Delhi from the Duranis.
Asked if he would continue to fight? A wounded Dattaji replied "If i survive, yes".
At this defiance Dattaji was killed.
Today, 223 years ago the last great Mughal era poet, Mirza Ghalib was born on 27th December, 1797. His legendry status is attributed to his poetry, reforming the Urdu language through the style of his writing of letters, as well as his character.
On this day in history (28th July 1402), after years of build up, the battle of Ankara takes place in which Amir Timur defeats the Ottomans led by Sultan Bayezid.
After the battle, Timur appointed Musa Celebi, the son of Bayezid as the new Ottoman sovereign.
In the opening a messenger of the Emperor recites his ghazal. Great poets such as Ghalib & Zauq are present & are seated in the positions referred to by Mirza Farhatullah Beg in his essay Dilli ki akhri shama (The twilight Delhi)

Mahmud of Ghazni was the first alleged Turkic ruler to adopt the title 'Sultan'. During his reign, he led several expeditions into India, conquering vast territories of the Punjab with Rajas beyond accepting his suzerainty.

Prince Dara Shikoh portrayed as a royal ascetic, Mughal India, circa 1640-55.
Unlike the typical portrait of a Mughal Prince, this portrait is remarkable for depicting Dara with a bare torso & lungi, in an ascetic pose that has yogic associations, a pose known as gomukhasana.
On this day, on the 17th of Ramadhan (624 CE), the Battle of Badr took place between the Muslims led by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ against the Quraish of Makkah.
Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Muslims of Medina managed to obtain a decisive victory against the Quraish .
