#OTD in 1066, William the Conqueror won the Battle of Hastings, defeating King Harold II and ending the Anglo-Saxon era 🏹

William went above and Bayeux-ond to assert his new position as king, building the Tower as a secure fortress and symbol of his Norman royal power.

#OTD in 1535, humanist philosopher and Chancellor of England Thomas More was executed on Tower Hill, found guilty of treason after refusing to support Henry VIII’s break from the Catholic Church.

His remains lie underneath the Tower’s Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula.
