I think there is a time and place for a dm to be paid for their services - like working the game room of a convention or other event, in fact I encourage that they are compensated for their time. But other than that if your playing for fun with friends than play for fun.

When I had to chance to introduce my kids to rpg’ing they brought 7 drama kids to play also- it was the most awesome and crazy game I have ever played- and this was one of their moments... for all the bravado - they were terrified to just open a door...
