It may look a relatively calm scene, but if you've ever seen these seals in real life, you know it will be a cacophony of barks, growls, grunts, honks, moans, and roars.   

Seals on the Rocks (1873) was painted by Albert Bierstadt.

The gentle giant makes sure that everybody has a good time.

Never Mind (1907) was painted by Arthur John Elsley (1860-1952). It shows three girls, three kittens and a Saint Bernard.

Elsley loved to paint these carefree scenes of childhood.

Death of Sappho (1881) is an impressive work by the Miquel Carbonell Selva, who was both a poet and painter.

It is his tribute to Sappho, an ancient poet who sung her lyrics accompanied by her lyre. According to one tradition, she jumped off a cliff.

For centuries, the Orient has inspired artists to create fantasy paintings.

A Dance under the Stars by Hans Zatzka (1859-1945) is a great example of this. And just like many other artists that used this theme, Zatzka had never visited those areas.
