July's birth flowers are the Larkspur and the Water Lily. This Water Lily is from the Minna R. Fernald Collection, a recently digitized collection that has over 300 intricate watercolors of many of Florida’s wildflowers.

"As a native of Gainesville, I found this thesis interesting. A 1938 sociological study by Edward Loring Miller, it has photos of buildings. I've seen and been in some of those original structures. Some have moved or been rebuilt. Just seeing this is truly a moment in history."
The bird of the month is the American Robin! It is a lovely songbird, popular for its warm orange breast. You may be familiar with Robin's eggs that are a light blue color. They also "rock in the tree tops all day long" and we "love to hear the robin go tweet tweet tweet."
The Yule log was the peak of the Solstice. Once in the fireplace, it was decorated in seasonal greenery, doused with cider or ale, and dusted with flour before set ablaze. The log would burn through the night, then smolder for 12 days.

International Bat Night was established to combat fears of “evil creatures of the night.” Without bats, mosquitoes would run rampant! We’d have to say goodbye to mangoes, bananas, guavas, (and tequila!), not to mention we’d lose 500+ species of plants. Thank the bat!
