#planespotting #planespotter #avgeek #aviation: Who else loves the Vought F8 Crusader? It was a single-engine supersonic fighter jet / interceptor used by the US Navy, French Navy, USMC and Philippine Air Force.
1,219 built starting 1955. 1/
12/ From the Conning Tower, we climb down to the Control Room. Below us is the Pump Room↖️(📸https://t.co/EQfNE6APXL), but that's closed now, so let's head aft past the Radio Room↗️and Galley↙️. Another cool diagram shows the air system↘️.
#IJN Shokaku-class - Of the six Kido Butai IJN aircraft carriers attacking Pearl Harbor (Kaga, Akagi, Hiryu, Soryu, Shokaku and Zuikaku), the Shokaku-class twins, Shokaku and Zuikaku, were brand new. Were they also the best? #USNavy #RoyalNavy #PearlHarbor 1/
4/ F3F-3↖️↗️; 27 built, all for #USNavy. Per Wiki, "Featured a redesigned forward fuselage forward of the aft cabane struts." I don't really see the difference, but... Also here's the F3F-2 cockpit↙️↘️ at @navalmuseum. 📸: https://t.co/PgAHSZGFNf.
2/ The new plane also added ground attack capability. The first two XF3F-1 prototypes crashed, killing the first pilot. 54 F3F-1's built; 650 hp Pratt & Whitney R-1535-72 Twin Wasp Junior, 1 x .30 cal, 1 x .50 cal; 2× 116 lb Mk IV bombs. Note the F3F-1's narrow cowling.
3/ ↖️↗️More ventral gunner position diagrams/photos from https://t.co/uRas915oow. TB=Torpedo bomber. F=Grumman, thus built the TBF, while the GM version was the TBM. Group shot↙️. Stunning painting from https://t.co/36nD1F2ptS shows .30 cal nose gun↘️.
#avgeek #USNavy #USAF #aviation: Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II’s three main blocks are F-35A (USAF), F-35B (STOVL for USMC) and F-35C (USN). Others include F-35I (Israel) and proposed F-35D and CF-35. So why are “booms” called that? Here's more jargon you'll love.
2/ In 1962, A2F-1 was redesignated A-6 Intruder but why I’m unsure. The YA2F-1s were redesignated A-6A and several hundred more A-6A Intruders were built. Excellent article with detailed Bureau Numbers tracking, specs: https://t.co/xwVVSFcoUm.
